It's all crap. Full of fillers, seriously lacking real nutrition, and expensive. Never mind the chaos with all the recalls and thousands of dogs dieing from the food a while ago.

I want to feed my dogs real food made in my kitchen. I have searched the web and there is so much info that I can't weed out the junk from the treasure. So, knowing how wise tribers are I thought I would ask here. Is there a cook book, favorite recipie, website, or any other resource you can share with me? Me and my dogs will greatly apreciate any help offered. Thanks so much!

We food purely raw food and they are our garbage disposals (food that falls on the ground when cooking and other misc scraps). Zarina - I see you're in Washington. We buy our raw food in bulk via a large group of Washington and Oregon people. If you are interested in learning out it, let me know.

I am in Southern Oregon - I am interested in the bulk group - can you post it on here so anyone else in the area will get the info too? Thanks.

My lab is 16 years old, and she does much better on the food that I make for her than on any commercial food I have found. She had a supposedly incurable immune disorder, and according to the vet she is in full remission. He told me a few years ago that she was in her last year. She is still doing fine with no health issues other than being old, and some arthritis.

I take the following and run all of it through an electric food grinder. Brown Rice, whatever meat I can find cheaply (usually from 99 Ranch or a mexican butcher where they have a lot of cheap meat and organ meat), vegetables (sometimes fresh, sometimes frozen. i always include plenty of green stuff, especially spinach. okra and zucchini are food too). I vary it a bit from week to week. For example, sometimes I will add beans if I am using them for something else anyway on the people food side of things.

I prefer to cook it for her, because it would be dangerous to trigger an immune reaction from fighting off bacteria. So, I cook the meat, vege and rice mixture. Once it has cooled down I stir in plain nonfat yogurt and nonfat cottage cheese. Dogs need calcium in their diets.

She also gets the same multi vitamin and multi mineral that I take daily dosage adjusted for her weight.

Mine is on a low protein and lowfat diet, which seems to be the best for a urinary incontinence problem she has had for years. According to her vet, it comes from being a pound puppy. She was only 8 weeks old when she was spayed. It is common for dogs spayed at an early age to be incontinent as adults. There is medication to help, but I find that the right diet helps just as much.

There are a few things that you should NOT feed a dog: onions, garlic, chocolate, large amounts of liver, tomato, potato, yeast. I understand that some dogs are lactose intolerant, in which case you would not want to use the cottage cheese or yogurt.

This is pretty much the same way I'm feeding my dogs. They are healthier and much happier eating this way. They see me cooking and they get to eat it so they think they are pretty spoiled. LOL Of course they are! I also think it makes us closer with me actually cooking their food. Makes me feel great and they know I love them enough to do the extra work.

I can't believe the garbage they put in commercial foods, even the ones that are supposed to be so great. No way would they be eating this crap if they were in the wild. I think real food is better than anything you can get in a box or a bag.

BTW, I cook her food once per week. It keeps in the fridge in a big container. I also keep a few days worth frozen in sealed bags so I have a couple of days leeway if I run out.

When she needs dogsitting (she always stays with a frienc) I just deliver individual frozen packages of her food, already portioned.

She had a number of health problems which were being treated effectively with drugs. However, putting her on a diet of high quality food, suited to her condition, some of the drugs have been eliminated, and others the dosage significantly reduced.
