Hello all
I am helping out a guy at work (well actually his brother) find a NO KILL facility that will take aggressive dogs in Minnesota or surrounding areas.
The dog is a lab and although it is just fine with people… it can be very aggressive with dogs it doesn’t know. He gets along great with dogs it does know in the neighbourhood but with others it becomes very aggressive.
They are looking to give him up but worry because of the aggression it is unlikely the dog can be re adopted under ‘normal’ conditions. The Lab is a very very loving dog when it is not in the company of other dogs, this leads me to believe it is a security or jealousy issue for him. I am hoping someone here has some contact they can try.
I have contacted all the ‘regular’ local shelters and they don’t take aggressive dogs….. any ideas?

Re: NO KILL FACILITY
Mon, May 7, 2007 - 10:07 AMHas he tried hiring a behaviorist to deal with this issue? I have a dog aggressive dog and we hired a behaviorist who has helped immensely. Plus it means one less dog in the shelter. Does he actually want his dog to live the rest of his life in a cage because he can't be adopted out? I find that even crueler than humanely euthanizing him. But the cruelest thing of all is to not even try and work with this dog to rehabilitate it. Chances are, the dog is just feeding off of the owner's anxiety (the problem with our dog) and the owner isn't providing consistant leadership. -

Re: NO KILL FACILITY
Mon, May 7, 2007 - 10:57 AMwell between me you and the fencepost (and the fact that I know they dont visit Tribe) I also think they should try harder to rehabilitate the dog, and from what I hear it sounds like one of the owners is high strung so for sure the dog is 'feeding' off the emotions. they aparently had a behaviorist of some kind come in and said the dog could be trained but they dont want to deal with it it sounds like.
When I heard this I told him to wait and let me see what is out there so the dog doesnt have to be killed. I get mad with people that cause the problem, then the dog gets blamed for doing what they told him to... but in this instance I dont really 'know' the people and the best way I can help is to help find a facility at least where he wont be killed. when the facility sees how nice he is (hopefully when he is away from the current owners) a new home will come.
appreciate any ideas :-) -

What about a Lab Rescue group? Has that been checked into? (Perhaps post about this in the Labrador Lovers tribe? Maybe someone there would have some good info. for you? I don't know the url offhand, but it's in my list of tribes. )
I'll be praying a happy solution is found for this pup.

Re: NO KILL FACILITY
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 6:50 AMI am sorry to say that the owners of the Lab I was looking for help with have decided to put the dog to sleep tomorrow. I am very upset about their decision as I dont think they gave him a fighting chance. I am still trying any last ditch efforts today and hope something comes up. Thanks for all you ideas (I will still try the 'lab' tribe today)
I cant say much more about it as I will get very angry please send peaceful thoughts and forgiveness (for his silly owners) to him, his name is "Sunny". -

Wed, May 9, 2007 - 1:19 PMOh my god I hate people sometimes. Why get a dog if you aren't willing to deal with anything less than perfect? What an awful thing to do. -

Re: NO KILL FACILITY
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 2:51 PMElyse I agree with you 100% . Believe me I am sheeding tears about this - having a pet is a responsibility... when are people going to learn - - you cant just throw a pet out when it isnt doing what you want or you have finished playing with it. I dont know these people ( it is the guy at works brother that has the dog) and I know they would never be friends of mine.
I am very sad about this. -

Re: NO KILL FACILITY
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 3:28 PMI'm sorry to hear this. My usual response to people like this would be "are you going to put your kid to sleep/give it away because he got in a fight at school?"

Re: NO KILL FACILITY
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 6:50 PMyou can try best friends animal sanctuary in utah. They do and will take agressive dogs. As long as they are people friendly.
When I was volunteering at the city pound, we transfered a few dogs that were good with people but not with other dogs.
Might be a drive, but could be worth it.
