Well its been two weeks since we picked up Chloe ( our lemon and white basset puppy) from the breeder. Ive had puppies before for, Well the last puppy i had is now 5....but anyways. I was not prepared for a basset puppy. All i heard from people around me was...They dont listen....all she'll do is howl....it takes forever to house break them.....they dig holes in your yard.......they smell funny.....there not good for anything.....and on and on and on. Its like everyone i know was way against me getting a basset puppy.
My adult dog Reggi is 5 years old. He is a German shorthair and chocolate lab cross. I use him for bird hunting. And when we are not hunting we do agility and obediance trials. He is walked for a total of 2 hours a day and we also go to the park so he can play fetch and run for at least an hour. All everyone can tell me is what a great dog i have. Hes got great manners, Hes so quiet, What a good boy he is, He listens so well.....and so on. What people dont see is the countless hours ive spent getting him like that. All the training, and toys, and treats, blood, tears, and countless pairs of shoes. He didnt come that way....We had to work at it!
Now with Chloe...She sleeps she eats she wrestles with Reggi then she sleeps again. I like it!!!! She is not stupid by any means. Ive had her for two weeks now and she already goes to the door and scratches to go out, and if i dont hear her scratching then she whines. She knows how to sit, lay down and drop it. Shes working on the out command but i know she will get it. Shes gotten one bath since shes been here and she doesnt stink. She has yet to show any interest in digging holes, i think its becasue when we are outside playing i keep her busy. She hasnt barked yet, little yips when she plays with reggi. But nothing close to howling. I know that can change when she gets older....lol. And shes great at keeping my feet warm on cold nights.
I think people sucks. The people that had a problem with me getting the breed that i did, know nothing about dogs or the training it takes to own one. I believe that there is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners and breeders. I found that everything people hate about dogs comes from human error.
In no way are basset hounds the easiest breed to raise. I knew this before i bought her. I did years of research of the breed and differnt breeders in my area. But to me...there is no differnce in the breeds when it comes to training, love, comfort, and most of all responsiblity to another life.
In the little time ive had this puppy shes brought more smiles to my face than i can count. She is my little angel...my little bundle of joy that i have waited so long to get. I just wish the people would just get over themselves and open their hearts and minds to something a little differnt everyonce in awhile. Just because you had a dog that lived next to you 10 years ago that barked not stop, doesnt mean all dogs are like that. The reason we have so many unwanted and unhealthy animals in this world is because people are selfish and selfserving.
Also....so sorry about the rant....lol! Ive just been doing a lot of thinking and got myself all worked up. Ive posted a couple of pics of my girl...feel free to comment on them. I hope you enjoy and that they can brighten up your day a bit...
Thanks
Tiffany~

Re: A new puppy!
04/03good for you Tiffany, alot of so called 'dog people' think a dog comes already trained and knows how to do everything we expect them to do, but the truth is there are no bad dogs just bad owners (well bad being a relative term for descriptive purposes lol). A good doggie takes work and respect and if you do not stimulate a dogs mind they will find their own way to do so. Digging? that one always made me laugh because dogs that dig obsessively are bored not naughty lol they need a job to do and their minds need stimulation.
kudos to you Tiffany and good luck with your new pup I know that Chloe is going to be worth every moment you spend with her and bring you so much joy you wont know how you lived with out her. -

Re: A new puppy!
04/03Fellow Basset owner/food slave here. Thanks Tiffany, I didn't mind your rant at all. I never ran into any of that negative talk about bassets, but it sounds like you are around more "serious" dog people than I am (agility, obedience, etc.).
I got my hounds as adults from rescue, so they only had to re-learn a bit of house training. I'm really impressed that Chloe is learning to signal when she wants to go out for potty! Kudos to you and her!
Breed prejudice drives me nuts too. There are lots of breeds I don't particularly care for, but if somebody else likes one of them, hey, go for it!
The only question/advice I give to prospective dog owners is: "Have you researched the breed? If not, please do, I learned a LOT about Bassets before I got mine, the research really paid off!"
My hounds make me laugh almost daily, they are the clowns of the doggie universe. :-)
Request: keep posting pics as she grows up. I never had my dogs as pups, so I love other people's puppy pics.
PS, I'm glad that Bassets are not that popular. Look at what happened to Collies and Dalmations due to Lassie & 101 Dalmations. (Many other breeds too.) Overbreeding and lots of impulse buying led to an awful lot of unhealthy and unwanted dogs, very sad.

Re: A new puppy!
04/03Hound parents are a different breed. I love my plott-mix, her bay, her smell, every single damned thing about her. Even when I find my socks in the back yard. Katie is doing fine with her training, and so am I. Good on you for the basset rescue! Bawrrl Rawwrll!!

Re: A new puppy!
04/03Dog breeds are interesting - there's definitely general traits that ring true, but every dog is an individual and doesn't always turn out like the breed description. We have a french bulldog and I kept reading similar things - difficult to housetrain, stubborn, difficult to train, lazy, blah, blah, blah... but Saffy's been great! She was house trained very quickly (she only goes inside when she's stressed - particularly when I'm on the phone, I think she thinks I'm suddenly crazy and talking to myself, which makes her anxious), she loves training (if only I was more motivated to teach her tricks!), she can be stubborn, but there's ways around it, and she tires out more quickly than other, sportier dogs, but she can definitely be active too.
With dogs I find it's a combination of nature and nurture - you're got a few givens (physique, general disposition) and it's up to you to shape it into a well mannered, happy doggie. Congrats on finding a sweet, loving pup like Chloe. Sounds like basset hounds that other people met were with the wrong owners. -

Re: A new puppy!
04/03When my pups Nubia, doberman of 6 old, passed away I got another one 2 days after, Raqia. Seemed cruel, after 2 days getting one, but after years of not having a dog, I opened the doors of love (as i call it) to the best creature on earth, and 6 months of love leaving me was just too sad to resist.
So we went and got Raqia, and is the 1rst dog in my life I spoiled so much...I spoil them, but this one...she kinda eats with me from the same plate sometimes.
She even got fat, looked like a labrador instead of a doberman.
And I was called bad owner, but it was just...she was weird as a puppy, she was like the commander of the 4 puppy left, and she was the bigger one, so she didnt like at all to leave her bros and sis. So she didnt payed me attention at all when we got her, and the 1rst day she did was when I was eating (after a few days of no eating because of being sad about Nubia passing away).
So then I was all "hey she loves me" and feeding her all the time to get her attention.
oh I just thougt of sharing this.
Some ppl think of other they r bad owners cos they dog get fat. I didnt feed her chocolate or anything like that, was just if i was having chicken for dinner, she would have half of my food. But she is weird, cos she likes even eating bananas, apples, oranges. She evn stole once an apple from my bf rucksack, watch her clip www.youtube.com/watch
