I had to board my dogs and they came back with spirochetes (a parasite). Nothing the day care could have prevented, because you can not vacinate for it. They are better now, but now I have run into another promblem. They have been on a bland chicken and rice dinner and now wont go back to their kibble. Cooner, my bigger dog will eat it mixed with chicken and rice but the Lil' Bit wont even touch it. any ideas on how to get them back on regular food?

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 2:30 PMOuch. That's awful. As for the food, it sounds harsh but if you really want them on regular food again, only offer them that. They may go hungry for a day or so, but they will come around. I've had to do this before with Killer as he gets pretty picky sometimes. I used to feed him some wet food on his dry food, but he started licking the kibbles to get the gravy and then spitting them back out. After a while of wasted food, I just offered him dry kibble and nothing else. He ate it by the second day. Dogs are so much like kids sometimes. They'll push to see just how much they can get away with.
Good luck! -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 1:54 PMI think Molly definitely has the right advice. When she gets hungry enough LilBit will return to her kibble. I hate it when Rupert does stuff like this, but they have to learn that they eat what we give them, period. Rupert has had too many treats during his training and he will often turn up his nose at his kibble - then he'll go and eat the cat food that Ben left on his plate!! Bad dog!
Just be patient CoCo. She'll come around. Don't cave in. -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 10:25 AMUnfortuanly they now have a virus and are back on the bland diet. They have both gained weight on the rice and chicken. Yes, they were back at the vet yesterday. I have now spent more than a months rent on the poochies and now know how to give subq iv fluids. I am learning the hard way how to be a vet tech. I feel so bad, my dogs have always been healthy, I dont understand whats going on. I feel so bad for them. -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 10:44 AMbe really really sure your vet has checked your guys over well for underlying problems, also if possible check with others at the boarding place and see if their dogs have become ill. I would also (if you arent already) give the bording place updates on your dogs health in case this turns into something legal. But keep in mind of course that as your guys imunes would have been down with the first infection they were at risk to get another and that is probably what happened.
I feel bad for you, the timing is always wrong but hang in there it will be all ok soon:-) -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 10:51 AMI have complete trust in my vet, if the barfing doesnt stop in a day or two then we scan them. ouch, I am running out of room on the credit cards. I have been updating the day care and I am friends with them which makes it hard. The first time they got sick, they got defensive with me and I wasnt asking for $ back or anything. I just updated them so if any of the other dog clients got ill, they would know what to look for. I hate to take day care away from them, they love it so. But if it come down to it, I will. I hope it will get better soon, they are my kids and they cant even tell me when they dont feel good. But I will try to stay positive and continue to love on them lots. -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 11:13 AMHang in there. With as much love and care as you give them, I'm sure it will come out alright.
I know of a great boarding and day care place here that actually has an "insurance" that they sell for $5 that covers the vet bills if your pups pick up something from their facility. Maybe there is a place like that near you? -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 11:31 AMThat is cool. It is in most of the day cares here that you basicly take your chances. -

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 7:52 PMAww - shit, hon!! You don't NEED this kind of crap - AT ALL!. Ok, so it's a virus - that much you know. That means, just staying cool and letting the damn thing pass through them. Don't trip over how sick they've been - it's just one of those things, CoCo. And they are both going to get better in the next couple of days.
I sure wish I was out there and could help you get through this by being a good dog-watchdog! I'd help to take care of those critters.
I understand your plight and I hope it all blows over very quickly. You call me anytime you need to. You have my number. (I hope....).
Hugs!
James

Re: NEED ADVICE....
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 9:33 PMWhenever one of mine have to go off a sick diet and back to dry, I put out some of the dry with a lot of liquid from the sick diet stuff. In other words, put some kibble in chicken soup with rice.
