Seizures and dogs

topic posted Thu, May 24, 2007 - 8:25 AM by  CoCo
My beloved Cooner (cooner hound Lab (?) mix) is havings Sieizures. He has his first two 13 months ago and then one 10 days ago and another last night. I am taking him to the vet today, but the will probably want to start him on phenobarbatol. Does anyone have any experience with this? The Vet was hessitant to start meds if the seizures stayed away more than less than one a month. Since this in not happening, it looks like it is time to start meds. I am interested in other stories or knowledge in this.

Thanks

PS if you look at the pics when you first open this tribe page,he is the brown and black hound, so very cute!

Yes - my labrador has epileptic seizures. They got closer and closer together and lasted longer each time. She's been on Sedabarb ( 4 little pills morning and evening) for 2 years now and to the best of my knowledge (I'm away at work all day) has only had one mild fit since then. I keep a phial of valium to administer rectally or nasally in case of an emergency but have not had to use it. She's had no bad side-effects that I can see ... in fact she's a much happier more playful dog. I think she the fits used to leave her very depressed before she went on treatment. She was 4 years old when treatment started. The vet told me that I would have to increase the sedabarb dosage with time as it's effectiveness would wear off, but that has not been a problem yet.

A low sodium all natural diet on a routine and homeopathy are both very successful in treating seizures without the use of addictive and harmful drugs. Go to www.drsagrera.com for a amazing homeopathic vet or look one up for your area.

My sister has a lab, and her lab has siezures if she gets a hold of and eats any chocolate.

That's because chocolate is toxic to dogs.

Well, I am giving the meds one more week. I wish I had never started them, but on the same day my identity was trying to be stolen, I killed the car in what should have been a fatal accident (with the dogs in the car), had a flat tire and still grieving the loss of my friend. So, not being in a great frame of mind to make discions, I started him. He is not happy, I can tell. I feel so bad I just dont know what to do and just breaks my heart. He just follows me arround (he is loving all the loves he is getting) but if I sit down, he just barks. Not for food, not to go out, not for water, just to bark. I understand all his other barks, but not this one.

Thanks for everyones ideas on this topic, I am going to do some research now that I am in a little better frame of mind.

His reaction to the meds does not sound right at all. My lab was a bit sleepy and wobbly to start with but that was all. She started on quite a high dose because she had had a fit that lasted for more than 2 hours ... that's how long it used to take me to get home and get her to the vet. I had to reduce the dosage daily until she had a mild fit again and then we held the dosage there. Moodwise she was much calmer and obviously happier. Have you spoken to the vet about his reaction?

I have, he said give it one more week (that would be a total of 3 weeks) and then we will talk alternatives. I LOVE my vet and have complete trust in him. He helped me and was avail 24/7 when my Sampson was dying of cancer. The doggie day care says he is much more mellow and tires out easier since the meds which is a more of a normal reaction. He also could be suffering from some PTSD from the car accident we were all in. I just dont know. He seems a bit wobbly sometimes and is on 90mgs. which is about middle of the road as far as doses go. I am also packing in preparation for moving (if I can find a new place that will take my dog/and have a yard for him). Not an easy thing to find, so he also might be vibing off of me. I just dont know.

His funny behaviour is probably from all the other disturbances ... he's on quite a low dose. Mine's on 90mg twice a day. I've thought of taking it lower but I don't have a doggy day care and there's a pool here she could fall into if she fitted while I was at work so I've left what's working as it is. She's acting a bit weird now - but that's because my suitcase is out and being packed for a business trip tomorrow - dogs KNOW about these things -:)

Thanks for the reasurance, he is also on 90 twice a day. I will try to calm my energy down and see if he does better. things have been crazy and home should be a calming place, which it hasnt been for a while now. Glad your doggie is doing OK. Travel safe!
