... the good, old-fashioned kind, where you have to get your hands dirty. If you don't know about a place like this near you, you might check into it. If everybody already knows these places exist, I apologize.
One of my local pet stores has a room in the back for dog washing, the do-it-yourself variety. It's really cool, especially if you have a big dog, as I have. They have these great "bath tubs" at a human-friendly level, and a ramp your dog can walk up to get in. Okay, so after the first time, your dog will probably know better than to calmly walk up to his fate, so then comes the part where you have to part lift, part cajole your dog into the tub and close up the entrance. It is SO much easier when everything's right there for you! A choice of shampoos, hanging upside-down with a nozzle. Oh, and, there's a choke chain with an extra length of chain for some moveability, but so your dog can't run away! So, you wet down, shampoo, rinse, towel dry your pet and free her from her bondage! There's even a hair dryer if you want to use it. And, best of all, YOU don't have any mess to clean up and you don't end up with a backache from having to bend over your dog.--Oh, and they have protective aprons for pet-washers, so that, theoretically, you don't end up soaking wet!
My pet store doesn't advertise this service, you just sort of have to know that it exists. The charge is $12, which, to me, is well worth the hassle saved!

Re: A BETTER Pet Washer
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 12:09 PMWell written !
I hate the back ache from dog washing... OMG. I always stand up like I'm an old woman with a hunched back after washing them...doing two is a killer !
Maybe I'll give it a go. Thanks. -

Re: A BETTER Pet Washer
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 6:24 PMYou're welcome! Besides the aching, old-lady back thing, my two main problems in washing my dog are her attempts to get away, when I have to try to hold on to a wet, soapy body and keep her in place, and dealing with the shaking thing, as if it's a payback for trying to wash her. Of course, one of her favorite times for that is when I'm trying to hold onto this slippery body that's trying to get away! So I'm especially grateful to have those two problems removed from the equation. Their collar keeps my baby in place and, if I'm quick enough, when I see the shake-and-send-soapy-water-flying thing coming, all I have to do is duck! -

Re: A BETTER Pet Washer
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 4:02 PMYes, I definitely need to come up with a better solution for washing my dog. We do have a do it yourself dog wash in town. Maybe I'll try that. I was completely drenched after washing her yesterday, and then once I was finished, she proceeded to roll around in the mud, and then jump up onto the bed while she was still soaking wet. Bless her furry little heart. -

Re: A BETTER Pet Washer
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 10:18 PM(hee-hee) Yeah, that's another great thing about the pet washing places. Your beast is fairly well dried before you leave the place, and way too dry by the time you get home for any of that passive-aggressive stuff!
