--Our little wiggler Ringo may have a disintegrating disc and the doc recommends an MRI but crimmeny! We got a low bid and a high bid (variations in meds, etc) and both are over $3,000! Does anyone know of any deals that might be had in Northern California?

A BETTER Pet Washer

... the good, old-fashioned kind, where you have to get your hands dirty. If you don't know about a place like this near you, you might check into it. If everybody already knows these places exist, I apologize.

One of my local pet stores has a room in the back for dog washing, the do-it-yourself variety. It's really cool, especially if you have a big dog, as I have. They have these great "bath tubs" at a human-friendly level, and a ramp your dog can walk up to get in. Okay, so after the first time, your dog will probably know better than to calmly walk up to his fate, so then comes the part where you have to part lift, part cajole your dog into the tub and close up the entrance. It is SO much easier when everything's right there for you! A choice of shampoos, hanging upside-down with a nozzle. Oh, and, there's a choke chain with an extra length of chain for some moveability, but so your dog can't run away! So, you wet down, shampoo, rinse, towel dry your pet and free her from her bondage! There's even a hair dryer if you want to use it. And, best of all, YOU don't have any mess to clean up and you don't end up with a backache from having to bend over your dog.--Oh, and they have protective aprons for pet-washers, so that, theoretically, you don't end up soaking wet!

My pet store doesn't advertise this service, you just sort of have to know that it exists. The charge is $12, which, to me, is well worth the hassle saved!

So its 10 minutes to closing, and a dog runs into out lobby, no tags, no collar, an choke chain with no information attached to a jumping licking, puppy full of excitement and energy......

sigh......

so there I am coaxing a puppy into my arms (which wasn't hard to do) and then convincing her she wants to come with me as we head off to get her rescued.....

a trip to the animal shelter with my spare leash from the car and to my amazement while I'm filling out her paper work the counter person scans the back of her neck and a "ping" goes off, "Yep, she's been tagged, here write the number down......" two minutes later a phone call is made and bingo, the puppy has an owner and they have a phone number to call.....

So as I head out, I get to thinking..... wow a micro-chip just made some family's day.... I know my rescue dogs have them, but I wonder what information is on there and is it current..... and how does someone go about finding out?

advice on stealing objects?

Hi everyone! I'm new to dog tribe, I love all the pictures and great advice....thanks in advance. so here goes, our dog Peanut is a 9 month old hound mix. We've had him since he was 3 months old. We brought him into our house that already had a now 4 year old Pomeranian/Pekignese named Bear. They get along fabulously now although there was a little tension and posessiveness with Bear in the beginning. Over the past few months Peanut has developed a stealing habit, the little theif! He especially likes our shoes and socks but somedays it includes anything personal he can find like my husbands tools from the garage or a hat or a scarf...etc..... The thing is he doesn't destroy them, which is good, he just takes them into the yard and leaves them in the mud, dirt and rain. He only does this when we go away. He knows it's wrong because when we come home and pick up the items from the yard he is nowhere to be found and when we do find him hiding in the house somewhere, he slinks around and throws himself down on the ground in submissive pose when he sees us holding the object. It seems like a guilty compulsion he has sometimes. We don't punish him, he already knows it's wrong. We've tried redirecting him to good things to play and chew with like toys and bones. We say "don't touch" in a firm voice to the object he's taken and then give him something good and say "good boy, good touch..." and play with him awhile with it. We've also tried just ignoring it. It seems to have gotten slightly better with the frequency of it but sure enough every time we leave for more than a few hours, there is something in the yard. When I've researched this I've only found info on stealing food or trying to play "keep away' with objects. He doesn't do either of these. He is a total sweetie we love him to death and we don't really any other problems besides normal puppy behavior, e.g. learning to not jump on people, etc... I guess I'm wondering if this is something he'll just grow out of. Or maybe it's something to do with he wasn't the first dog here. At first our dog Bear was very posessive with toys and stuff, she definitely didn't want to share. Now she has mellowed out and they play with the same toys regularly (and eachother constantly). Anyways, just throwing it out there to see if anybody has any thoughts?
Thanks!

Love Dogs

My friend Salamander, reminded me on this beautiful poem.....let's reflect a bit on it....

One night a man was crying Allah! Allah!
His lips grew sweet with praising,
until a cynic said, “So!
I’ve heard you calling out, but have you ever
gotten any response?”

The man had no answer to that.
He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep.
He dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls,
in a thick, green foliage.

“Why did you stop praising?” “Because
I’ve never heard anything back.”

“This longing you express
is the return message.”

The grief you cry out from
draws you toward union.

Your pure sadness
that wants help
is the secret cup.

Listen to the moan of a dog for its master.
That whining is the connection.

There are love dogs
no one knows the names of.

Give your life
to be one of them.

Hi guys and gals.

After watching my boy jump over and over again at tree branches that are at least 7ft high i keep thinking it might be cool to get him into those distance jumping competitions like you see on tv. Does anyone know how to get involved with such a thing? So far my searches are not turning up much.

Btw i live near San Fran if that makes any diference.

thanks in advance.

Does anyone know how to cure hiccups in a pet? Bazil (my rabbit) has had hiccups for the last 2-3 days or more, and they seem to be getting more frequent (about 1 per second and constant). I'm sure they will eventually go away, but if anyone has any ideas....

Nike suspense contract with Vick

I know you heard from me earlier today or yesterday, but I wanted you to be one of the first to know: Nike announced today that it has suspended Michael Vick's contract without pay and will stop selling all Vick-related products at its stores.

This is a big victory, one that simply would not have happened without your action and those of more than 165,000 others.

As you know, the allegations against Michael Vick are so serious and disturbing that The Humane Society of the United called on his corporate backers to end their commercial relationships with the star player. I’m so pleased that Nike has signaled it has a zero tolerance policy for athletes who may be involved with staged animal fights and other forms of malicious animal cruelty.

Nike's statement reads as follows:

“Nike has suspended Michael Vick’s contract without pay, and will not sell any more Michael Vick product at Nike owned retail at this time. As we’ve said before, Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. However, we do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen in the United States, therefore, we have not terminated our relationship.”

Also today, Reebok agreed to stop selling Michael Vick-branded products. The company does not have a contract with Vick but has an official relationship with the NFL to sell its merchandise.

Thank you again for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,
Urge Nike to cut ties with Vic

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/US_2007_dogfighting_nike?rk=r1wpat61BwhqE

Thank you so much for urging the NFL to suspend Michael Vick by signing our petition on Care2.com!

As you may know, because of your action and those of more than 275,000 others who contacted the NFL through our campaign, the league ordered Vick to stay out of training camp. We're pleased, and we will press the NFL to keep Vick off the football field until the resolution of his dogfighting charges in federal court.

I'm writing you today -- one day after Vick entered his "not guilty" plea in court -- to ask you to urge Nike to drop Michael Vick.

The company is the most prominent corporate sponsor of Vick. And as late as this week, Nike was still selling a $16 “Vick Hero” tee-shirt for boys and selling other Vick-related products in its retail stores.

With public pressure mounting, Nike last week issued a statement condemning cruelty to animals. It called the charges against Vick “disturbing” and added, “we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent.”

Federal authorities have charged Vick with a series of federal offenses, including involvement in a dogfighting ring operated from his property that has left a string of dead, wounded, and suffering animals along the Eastern Seaboard. Nike has said that Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen. That, of course, is true. But this is no moment to tell America's youth to look up to such a man.

Please urge Nike to end its relationship with Vick now.

Young people have been seduced by pop culture icons who glamorize the underground world of dogfighting. Every corporate and political leader needs to make it plain that going down this road is a dead end. The Vick case is where that campaign must start.

Thank you for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,
Vasculitis?

Our newest addition is a Great Dane/Lab mix named BlackJack. I took him to the vet for 2 reasons this past week. The first being that since we've had him he seems to have really soft stool and he has sporadic diarrhea despite not changing his food. The second issue is that he was scratchign a lot and I wasn't sure if he had some sort of allergy or what.

We're starting him on a food trial because my vet believes he may have a food allergy (with the bathroom problems and the constant itching and a negative skin scrape).

The problem is that he has little dry patches on his ears that come and go away and I showed them and talked to her about them. I thought it was because of the scratching and she thinks it might possibly be vasculitis that can be managed with a daily medication. She said she'd need to do a biopsy to diagnose it. I'm having a really hard time giving her the okay to do this because I'm hoping it's part of the food allergy (even though she doesn't believe it is). I don't want him to have to go through anything that isn't totally necessary especially when it comes to removing any piece of his body, even if it is a small piece.

I'm trying to do some research because I don't know anything about vasculitis and I'm hoping someone out there know something about it, has a dog with it, has any suggestion whatsoever.

Thanks!
Kirsten

Hello all. I am really concerned about Rocky, my 5 year old boxer. He has been diagnosed with anxiety problems and is currently taking fluoxetine daily, which seems to be helping in most aspects. I have been dealing with this for years with him and have done test after test to find what the root of the problem is. He no longer gets upset when I leave and seems calmer in general, but he still pees in his sleep sometimes. It has been happening more frequently in the last month. Last night, I was cleaning the bedroom and watching some tv. Rocky was sleeping on the floor at the foot of the bed. A while later, I noticed that he had dribbled urine on the carpet. Not a lot, maybe a teaspoon or two. He was still sleeping soundly when I noticed it. I had to wake him to put him outside so I could clean it up. He has also wet his doggie bed several times in the last month. When that happens, it's usually a lot more urine, likely emptying his bladder. Could he be having bad dreams? I've done urinalyisis on him multiple times and it always comes back fine. We tested for diabetes insipidus and that was also negative. I got a second opinion about 2 years ago and that's when I finally resorted to the anxiety meds. I hate the idea of medicating him, but it does seem to be helping.

Nothing has changed in his environment in the last month. I work a lot, but I come home for lunch and generally set my own schedule, so he is not alone for long periods or anything. He is crated when I am gone, but my toy poodle always goes in with him. I had two crates for the longest time, but they insist on being together. We also have a weimaraner puppy crated next to them, but she's almost 5 months old now, so I don't think he's reacting to that. She doesn't sleep in the bedroom with us yet, so I just don't think that could be part of the problem. I have a mini zoo, but they all get along nicely and nothing has changed that I am aware of. I just hate to not know why Rocky is having these potty issues. Has anyone else had this problem? I will gladly do more testing if it would help, but I so far have spent tons of money and still have no answer. Ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance for any help. And feel free to ask questions if I wasn't clear about something. It's hard to give full background without writing a novel. :)

I had to board my dogs and they came back with spirochetes (a parasite). Nothing the day care could have prevented, because you can not vacinate for it. They are better now, but now I have run into another promblem. They have been on a bland chicken and rice dinner and now wont go back to their kibble. Cooner, my bigger dog will eat it mixed with chicken and rice but the Lil' Bit wont even touch it. any ideas on how to get them back on regular food?

Dog nursing home to employ puppies to raise spirits

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Japan will get its first nursing home for dogs with round-the-clock monitoring by doctors and a team of puppies to help aging pooches feel younger, a pet products company said Wednesday.

Owners pay 98,000 yen ($800) a month to keep their dogs at the Soladi Care Home for pets, which opens Friday, according to a joint release by Soladi Co. and the Endo Veterinary clinic in Tochigi, eastern Japan.

Veterinarians at the home will offer round-the-clock monitoring, and residents will be fed specially fortified food, the release said.

The home, which can accept 20 dogs at one time, will also employ puppies to play with the aging dogs to help them keep fit and feel younger, the release said.

Analysts say that a boom in pet ownership in Japan, coupled with better health care and a more balanced diet, has led to a surge in elderly pets in Japan.

That has spurred doting owners to turn to vitamins, aromatherapy and even acupuncture to help their companions through their old age.

PETA

Since another poster got all up in arms that mentioning PETA being against pet ownership, claiming that we were attacking them, here is what PETA says *themselves* on the issue:

"We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of "pet keeping"—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as "pets"—never existed. The international pastime of domesticating animals has created an overpopulation crisis; as a result, millions of unwanted animals are destroyed every year as "surplus." This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. Their lives are restricted to human homes where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to."
http://www.peta.org/campaigns/ar-petaonpets.asp

This is one of the many reasons why I do not support PETA. I cannot "attack" PETA if what I say is true.

My daughter had two bulldogs, both had allergies but one was especially bad. They took him to Tuffs University animal hospital in Boston to try to find exactly what the problem was. He looked like an abused dog with large patches of hair missing and very raw skin. Anyway after thousands of dollars in tests vets decided his skin was way to inflamed to do any more allergy testing so opted to put him on atopica for six months to calm down the skin so they could do further testing. My son in law didn't want to put him on the atopica because he heard bad things about it but agreed to do it for a short time. Bear in mind the dog had every test known to man done on him and NOTHING showed up except the allergy problem. Two months later my daughter took him to the vet (our vet) because he had diareah, the dog was in stage 5 cancer. So it was back to Boston again where they told her he was a good candidate for chemotherapy so they tried that, he had one treatment, stayed at the hospital for 4 days and was allowed to come home. He wasn't acting sick at all and was scheduled for another treatment the following wednesday. Wednesday came, she took him, vet tech came in and did blood work and said if all was ok she'd be back to get him for his treatment. She walked out of the room, the dog stood up, turned in a circle and dropped dead. Twice they revived him and the third time they asked if she wanted them to crack his chest, she was devestated and asked if it would save him and they said probably not so she said "let him go". Been a really rough time for them getting over his loss and we just want to warn people about atopica. Can't say thats what killed him but think about it a perfectly healthy dog goes in for tests put on this medication and eogjt days after being diaganost with cancer he's dead? Think about it, I would never never let my dogs have this drug. Of course the atopica company refuses all responsibility but they did admit it destroys the amune system and killed t cells which fight off cancer. Its actually the drug used on people so they don't reject organs after organ transplant. Best keep it for what it was originally made for and not give it to pets. This atopica thing is strictly my opinion, can't prove anything but you make up your own mind about it.

My beloved Cooner (cooner hound Lab (?) mix) is havings Sieizures. He has his first two 13 months ago and then one 10 days ago and another last night. I am taking him to the vet today, but the will probably want to start him on phenobarbatol. Does anyone have any experience with this? The Vet was hessitant to start meds if the seizures stayed away more than less than one a month. Since this in not happening, it looks like it is time to start meds. I am interested in other stories or knowledge in this.

Thanks

PS if you look at the pics when you first open this tribe page,he is the brown and black hound, so very cute!

NO KILL FACILITY

Hello all

I am helping out a guy at work (well actually his brother) find a NO KILL facility that will take aggressive dogs in Minnesota or surrounding areas.

The dog is a lab and although it is just fine with people… it can be very aggressive with dogs it doesn’t know. He gets along great with dogs it does know in the neighbourhood but with others it becomes very aggressive.

They are looking to give him up but worry because of the aggression it is unlikely the dog can be re adopted under ‘normal’ conditions. The Lab is a very very loving dog when it is not in the company of other dogs, this leads me to believe it is a security or jealousy issue for him. I am hoping someone here has some contact they can try.

I have contacted all the ‘regular’ local shelters and they don’t take aggressive dogs….. any ideas?

Chemical lawn treatment

I rent my house and without my knowledge, my landlord had my lawn chemically sprayed. The company says it is not dangerous to the dogs, but I dont trust them, nor do I think 4-10 hours is enough time to keep them safe. Especially since it is sping and they are all about eating grass this time of year. Anyone have any expericence or knowledge in this area, the list of chemicals they used are: Nitrogen, iron, Trimec/Speed Zone, and Barricade. I have already lost my sweet malmute to cancer and I can not stand the thought of losing another pet. They are at day care today and they can stay the night there too, but if it is safe to bring them home, I would rather have them with me. I just want what is safest for my dogs.

Help, advice, anyone?

PERSONALITY: Quiet & gentle
TURN ON’S: My kennel & running
TURN OFF”S: Fast reaching for my collar
HISTORY: I was found at a rest area on
I-65 northbound, hence my name. I was super skinny, full of wounds and parasites and terrified. Now I am neutered, heartworm negative, healthy and happy. My vaccines are up to date.
OTHER: I am very good with other dogs, I like cats and children are fine too (as long as they are well mannered like I am). I do need a fenced in yard because I like to run a lot and far. I always come home, but it is too dangerous to let me roam. I really need my kennel, so that I feel safe and comfortable.
EXTRAS: I come with health records, my collar & leash, Advantage & Heartgard to keep me healthy. (Negotiable: kennel included)
DESCRIPTION: I am about a year and a half to 2 years old. I am certain I am part Black Labrador, but that is all I am certain of. I am thinking possibly Great Pyrenees. I am a big dog, but I don’t take up much room. I will let you know when strangers arrive, but I do not bark excessively.

Did you know raisins, Easter lilies can be hazardous to your pet's health?

Be careful what you feed your pet
Did you know raisins, Easter lilies can be hazardous to your pet's health?
By Herb Weisbaum
MSNBC contributor
Updated: 11:39 a.m. ET April 3, 2007

It’s been almost a year now since Troy Master’s 4-year-old cat, Bill, died after nibbling on a bouquet of lilies. Even so, I could hear the pain in his voice as he told me about that terrible day.

“I felt like Bill would always be safe in my house, so having this happen from flowers just kind of blew my mind,” Masters told me.

He had put the vase of lilies up high, where he thought his two cats couldn’t get at them. Both did. One got very sick, but survived. Bill, a Maine Coon, could not be saved.

At the time, Masters didn’t know lilies are highly toxic to cats. Eating even a small amount of the plant can cause kidney failure.

“You just cannot trust a cat; they can climb,” says Steven Hansen, senior vice president of the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center. That’s why the ASPCA says cat owners should never bring any type of lily into the house.

Many other plants are toxic to both cats and dogs, including the azalea, kalanchoe, oleander, and sago palm. Tulip and narcissus bulbs can cause convulsions and cardiac problems.

On the other hand, despite what we hear each year around Christmas, the poinsettia is not a toxic plant. It can cause a little stomach upset, but the ASPCA says it is not poisonous to pets.

Home is where the dangers are
Our homes are filled with things that can poison our pets. Dogs tend to get into trouble more often than cats because they’re not very picky about what they eat.

“Remember, these are animals that think cat poop is a delicacy!” says Therese Grover, DVM, a veterinarian at Seattle’s Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services. “They’ll eat just about anything and everything if it’s left in their reach; even things you wouldn’t think taste good.”

According to the ASPCA, human medications are the top threat to dogs. The following can be lethal to them, even in small doses: pain killers, cold medicines, anti-cancer drugs, antidepressants, vitamins, and diet pills.

It's easy to assume a child-resistant container is also dog-resistant. But this safety packaging won't stop a dog — to them a pill bottle is just another toy.

The ASPCA’s Steve Hansen wanted to see for himself how quickly his dog, Gracie, could get into a pill container. So he got one, filled it with candy and dropped it on the floor. Hansen says it took Gracie less than 15 seconds to crush it and get to the candy inside.

New threat for dogs: xylitol
Xylitol is a natural sweetener used in all sorts of sugar-free products, including gum, mints, ice cream, and a variety of foods made for diabetics. Last year, after seeing a huge increase in the number of xylitol poisonings, the ASPCA issued a warning about the sweetener.

Here’s the problem. Dogs metabolize xylitol differently than people. It causes a sudden drop in blood sugar, which results in seizures, tremors, weakness, and collapse. Even small amounts of xylitol — just 3 or 4 pieces of gum sweetened with it — can make a pooch very sick.

In some cases, a dog can be comatose within a half hour. Other times, it can take up to 12 hours for symptoms to develop. So if you ever suspect your dog ate something containing xylitol, call your vet right away. Just because the animal doesn’t show warning signs immediately, doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods; life-threatening liver damage can develop a few days later.

Other food threats
I think every pet owner knows that chocolate is a no-no. The ASPCA says milk chocolate in small amounts is not a serious threat — a couple of Hershey’s Kisses aren’t going to hurt the average dog. A bag of them, eaten by a small dog, is a different matter.

Both baking chocolate and high-quality dark chocolate are more of a threat because the ingredient that affects dogs is more concentrated in them.

Did you know you’re not supposed to feed your dog grapes or raisins? Noel Richards learned all about that when her Cocker Spaniel, Ollie, ate a bag of chocolate-covered raisins. She knew the chocolate was a problem, but until she contacted her vet, had no idea the raisins were also a threat.

“We were lucky,” Richard says. “We found out about it right away.” After having his stomach pumped Ollie was miserable for a couple of days, but he’s OK.

Grapes and raisins seem to be a hazard specific to dogs. The ASPCA says they can cause kidney failure. “We don’t know why it happens. We don’t know what the toxic level is,” Steve Hansen tells me. “But it is well-documented that it does happen.”

Some dogs can eat grapes and raisins without ill effect. Others can get very sick after eating just a few. Because so little is known about the toxin involved, the ASPCA urges pet owners not to feed their dogs any grapes or raisins. In rare cases, that treat could kill your pet.

Food no-no's for pets

- Alcoholic beverages
- Avocado
- Chocolate (all forms)
- Coffee (all forms)
- Fatty foods
- Macadamia nuts
- Moldy or spoiled foods
- Onions, onion powder
- Raisins and grapes
- Salt
- Yeast dough
- Garlic
- Products sweetened with xylitol
Source: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center

Your goal is a poison-safe home
You can protect your pet if you act as if you had a toddler in the house — one who never grows up. Store anything toxic in a place where your pet cannot get at it — up high or in locked cabinets or containers.

Remember the potential hazards in your garage, including anti-freeze and other fluids for your car, and yard chemicals. Fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides are all potentially fatal to your pets.

If you ever suspect your pet has gotten into something dangerous — act quickly. Don’t wait for symptoms to develop; they can take a while. Call your vet right away.

There is much more you can do to make your house a poison-safe home. I encourage fellow pet lovers to read more about the subject.

My mom's dog is most likely going to have to his eyes removed. Sad story. I go over it in my blog, but I'll spare those that don't want to hear it. My mom is really upset about this. Does anyone have any experience with a blind dog and can offer some tips/advice that I can pass on to her to make her feel less hopeless?

I'm about to take my boy to Australia with me after wrestling with the pros and cons of the effects of the long flight and month in quarantine on him. Last night a 'friend' berated me for how cruel I was being to him. Have other pet owners moved their pets internationally? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this!
Thanks!

Madness, China killing dogs

I just found this http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/440348024?ltl=1175536576 taken from this blog http://elektrablog.blogspot.com/

I know is hard to read, but anyone know about this being true? Is disgusting, there are pics and everything showing men dressed as police beating dogs.

China's campaign to kill all pet dogs
The kill is set to begin on March 16, we need to collect as many
signatures as possible, and send BEFORE that date in hopes that the cull will be aborted. Thank you for signing and please crosspost.

am a common citizen of Beijing, China. I'd like to tell you something terrible happened now in Beijing. On the large scale, The Chinese government is slaughtering dogs who has not certificates or who are just taller than 35 centimeters. The government has organized policemen and special dog-killing teams to arrest or kill dogs on the spot wherever they find the dog in the city. Many dogs have been hit to death on the street. Some of them were hung on the trees and were whipped to death. Some of others were caught and closed into suffocating dogs' concentrating camps to wait for execution. Everyday these bloody slaughter scenes are on play in every place of China. As the capital of China, Beijing is the worst place for dogs. From November 6, 2006, The policemen of Beijing are going to break into common people's houses who have large dogs or no-certificate's dogs at home. The dogs will be caught and be taken to the dogs' concentrating camp and wait for execution. And this is the real situation we have to accept.
And now please allow me to tell you why these dogs have not certificates. Basically, there are
2 reasons: First, Some owners can not afford the expensive fee for dog's certificate. Take Beijing for instance, Fee for the first year is RMB1000, And RMB500 for every year from the second year on. As you know, China is still a developing country, not each family can afford the charge. Second, For those dogs taller than 35 centimeters, our government refuse to give them ID card. So-called reason is they are tall and perhaps make people scared. Their ban is aim at all of large dogs including all the mild-tempered and few-barked ones such as golden retrievers, Labrador dogs and Scotland shepherds, etc.
The strongest explanation of Chinese government's about their killing of dogs is: Dog will spread canine madness. However, everybody knows that canine madness is entirely different from SARS and bird's flu. It's preventable through bacterin injection to dogs and can be remedied by bacterin injection to human beings. In China, only those dogs who have certificates can be injected the bacterin for free every year. Whereas many large dogs' owners, just like us, take our dogs to pet hospitals for injection by ourselves. Actually, most of cases of canine madness appeared in the rural areas of China. Just because our government has not tried its best on canine madness' prevention and has not accurate management on dogs, many people ignore the danger and do not prevent illness by means of injection in time, especially for peasants. Those owners whose dogs bit other people can easily avoid punishment if they run away or disavow they are owners. All of these lead to the tragic . Just let's think?if the government inject bacterin for all of dogs for free in China every year, undoubtedly, the number of ailing dogs must be greatly reduced. If the government permit all the dogs get certificates and ask all of them should tie the ID cards on , I believe nobody will avoid punishment any more since people will get the owner's information through the card. Why don't our government choose a reasonable way to control the disease? Why do they just kill these innocent animals by incredible cruel way? It's human beings' fault, but not dogs'.
I was born in the seventies. When I was still a little girl, my parents told me dogs are out best friends. But today in China, in the 21st century, most of parents only tell their children the dog is dangerous, so keep away from them anytime. Because of unilateral publicizing by the Chinese government and all kinds of media, more and more people are misled. I just want to say, the dog is still our friend, they are not virus, they are not dangerous. They will always bring us pure love and soul's peace. Perhaps they are just a kind of pet to owners, but the owners means a whole world to them. Dogs' life is quite short, maybe only 11 or 12 years. Why don't we make them happy and peaceful? When I chatted with a foreign friend, he told me nobody put the dog into cage because that means disrespect in his country. The dog is not humble in many countries except China. They are not regarded as food either except China. I think dogs are different from many other animals not only because they have emotion and very intimate to their owners, but also they never betray. Many of us can hardly do this, don't we?
I have many friends who have dogs in Beijing. Some of them belong to DINK families. Some others are old people who live alone. They love their dogs very much because the dog means one member of families always accompany with them. Undoubtedly, killing the dog must be hurtful and terrible to them. The dog bring them entire joy and comfort. These owners love their dogs just like love their own children. But why? Why does the government plan to slaughter??
I wrote several letters to our government. I asked for mercy for the innocent animals. Eventually, nobody gave me answer. So I have to write to you. People said the slaughter will be cruel more and more before the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. But why? Is there any relations between Olympic Games and killing dogs??
So dear officers, please help us. Please stop the cruel inhumanity towards animals in China. We are willing to do anything cooperate with our government if they won't kill animals at random. Our government should punish those owners who have uncivilized behavior during their keeping dogs in actual life. Remember the punishment must be accepted by people, but not dogs. Everybody knows it's not dogs' fault.
My dog, a 2-year-old golden retriever, named Happy, She is a very soft and good-tempered girl. My friend sent her to me just 50 days after her birth. Just like treat our own child, My husband and I give her all our love. We take her to the pet hospital to inject relative bacterin for her every year. We never take her out for a walk during the daytime for not disturbing other people. Usually we take her out at 5:30 in the morning and after 10:00 in the evening. As a matter of fact, Happy almost never run in the sun. She never bark just like all of golden retrievers. She loves my slippers and always lie on them and snore aloud. My honey Happy, a real cute and lovely girl, will be killed by our government. Why? How can I understand? From yesterday on, I dare not to take her out, because outside is dangerous. I can read the expression in her eyes, but I have not any other ways. I'd rather lock her in the house, but not see her arrested and killed by people. To be honest, if any policeman want to break into my house and take her away, I'm not sure what I will do. It's just the same as rob my own child away to me. I believe I will hold a stick or a kitchen knife in the face of them .
Dear officers, perhaps you have got a little news about Chinese slaughter towards dogs, but you never imagine how terrible it is now. Many of owners who have mild large dogs at home in Beijing just like me can not keep quiet any more. We have decided to get together outside the gate of Zoo of Beijing on the November 11, 2006. The theme of our assembly will be: Object to the limit of 35 centimeters towards dogs and condemn the uncivilized dogs' owners.
If you can understand our feeling, if you hope to support us, help us please. Please help all of poor dogs live in China. Please make your efforts to persuade the Chinese government to change their cruel policy towards animals. I really love my motherland. I am proud of my country because the 2008 Olympic Games will be held here. But if that means death to innocent lives, please don't come.
On behalf of all of virtuous Chinese people , on behalf of innocent and helpless animals and their owners, on behalf righteousness of human beings, please help us, please help us, please help us.

A new puppy!

Well its been two weeks since we picked up Chloe ( our lemon and white basset puppy) from the breeder. Ive had puppies before for, Well the last puppy i had is now 5....but anyways. I was not prepared for a basset puppy. All i heard from people around me was...They dont listen....all she'll do is howl....it takes forever to house break them.....they dig holes in your yard.......they smell funny.....there not good for anything.....and on and on and on. Its like everyone i know was way against me getting a basset puppy.

My adult dog Reggi is 5 years old. He is a German shorthair and chocolate lab cross. I use him for bird hunting. And when we are not hunting we do agility and obediance trials. He is walked for a total of 2 hours a day and we also go to the park so he can play fetch and run for at least an hour. All everyone can tell me is what a great dog i have. Hes got great manners, Hes so quiet, What a good boy he is, He listens so well.....and so on. What people dont see is the countless hours ive spent getting him like that. All the training, and toys, and treats, blood, tears, and countless pairs of shoes. He didnt come that way....We had to work at it!

Now with Chloe...She sleeps she eats she wrestles with Reggi then she sleeps again. I like it!!!! She is not stupid by any means. Ive had her for two weeks now and she already goes to the door and scratches to go out, and if i dont hear her scratching then she whines. She knows how to sit, lay down and drop it. Shes working on the out command but i know she will get it. Shes gotten one bath since shes been here and she doesnt stink. She has yet to show any interest in digging holes, i think its becasue when we are outside playing i keep her busy. She hasnt barked yet, little yips when she plays with reggi. But nothing close to howling. I know that can change when she gets older....lol. And shes great at keeping my feet warm on cold nights.

I think people sucks. The people that had a problem with me getting the breed that i did, know nothing about dogs or the training it takes to own one. I believe that there is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners and breeders. I found that everything people hate about dogs comes from human error.

In no way are basset hounds the easiest breed to raise. I knew this before i bought her. I did years of research of the breed and differnt breeders in my area. But to me...there is no differnce in the breeds when it comes to training, love, comfort, and most of all responsiblity to another life.

In the little time ive had this puppy shes brought more smiles to my face than i can count. She is my little angel...my little bundle of joy that i have waited so long to get. I just wish the people would just get over themselves and open their hearts and minds to something a little differnt everyonce in awhile. Just because you had a dog that lived next to you 10 years ago that barked not stop, doesnt mean all dogs are like that. The reason we have so many unwanted and unhealthy animals in this world is because people are selfish and selfserving.

Also....so sorry about the rant....lol! Ive just been doing a lot of thinking and got myself all worked up. Ive posted a couple of pics of my girl...feel free to comment on them. I hope you enjoy and that they can brighten up your day a bit...

Thanks

Dog saves owner from choking

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070328/ap_on_fe_st/heimlich_hound;_ylt=AhyoH.xodU2VqWlwi6T0pOvMWM0F

CALVERT, Md. - Toby, a 2-year-old golden retriever, saw his owner choking on a piece of fruit and began jumping up and down on the woman's chest. The dog's owner believes the dog was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life.

Debbie Parkhurst, 45, of Calvert told the Cecil Whig she was eating an apple at her home Friday when a piece lodged in her throat. She attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself but it didn't work. After she began beating on her chest, she said Toby noticed and got involved.

"The next think I know, Toby's up on his hind feet and he's got his front paws on my shoulders," she recalled. "He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest."

That's when the apple dislodged and Toby started licking her face to keep her from passing out, she said.

"I literally have pawprint-shaped bruises on my chest. I'm still a little hoarse, but otherwise, I'm OK," Parkhurst said.

"The doctor said I probably wouldnt be here without Toby," said Parkhurst, a jewelry artist. "I keep looking at him and saying 'Youre amazing.'"

I've always instinctively stayed away from it. If it's bad for people, it must be bad for dogs....here's one of the links that's informative. http://blessingsforlife.com/dietnutrition/canolaoil.htm

Dog's injury has anguished owner looking for answers

I always worry on how groomers treat my dog when I take her in- this just spooks me

Dog's injury has anguished owner looking for answers

By Natalie Singer

Seattle Times staff reporter

When Anni Sherffius' two "babies" came home from the groomer just before Christmas, their silky hair shone and they smelled clean. But Jasmine, a multicolored 2-year-old Shih Tzu, was acting strange.

Sherffius couldn't figure out why the dog was trembling, or why she yelped when Sherffius tried to cuddle her or settle her onto her favorite pillow. Stuck inside because of a snowstorm, Sherffius tried to comfort her precious dog the best she could.

When the dog didn't seem to feel better several days later, Sherffius examined her again. She noticed her ear was "stiff as cardboard," so she decided to soak it. What happened next horrified the dog owner.

"I put her ear in the water, and it floated away," she said, sobbing.

Her vet soon told her that she suspected the groomer had cut off Jasmine's ear and then glued it back on, Sherffius said.

"That dog screamed like a butchered pig," Sherffius said. "Every time I talk about it, I break down."

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigating the groomer, who worked at J'Rae's Professional Pet Grooming. The company appears to have shut down, and a business phone number has been disconnected. Neither the company's former registered owner nor the groomer could be reached.
Finding a dog groomer

Dog owners in need of a reputable groomer should follow these tips:

Ask for referrals from your veterinarian, local breeder and other dog owners.

Check the Better Business Bureau for complaints against the groomer.

Take a tour: See how dogs are controlled, and weigh the risks associated with different types of restraints. For example, some owners dislike the idea of cages, but loose dogs underfoot can cause accidents when groomers are working with sharp tools.

Ask whether dogs are groomed on a schedule and returned to the owner promptly or left in the facility all day.

Ask whether there are enough employees on hand to manage all the dogs, monitor the dryers at all times and deal with customer inquiries.

Find out how much experience and training each individual groomer has.

Source: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The shop, just outside of Gig Harbor, was taken over by a new owner in 2005 and licensed until November, according to the state departments of Revenue and Licensing. There are no reported complaints against the company with the Better Business Bureau.

Pierce County investigators have been unable to contact anyone with the business but haven't finished looking into the matter, said sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer. Sherffius, a dog lover who has owned and bred Pomeranians, Lhasa apsos and Shih Tzus for almost 30 years, said she is heartbroken over Jasmine's ordeal.

"These dogs are like my children," she said. "Wherever I go, they go. I have never heard a dog cry like this."

Jasmine, whose ear was apparently taken off at the halfway point, was diagnosed with a severe infection and placed on antibiotics, Sherffius said. She was also given pain medication, which she is still taking.

Jacque Schultz, a program adviser with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said it's not uncommon for pets to sustain injuries during grooming, though she hasn't heard of an ear being cut off and then glued back.

"We hear about animals dying in the drying cages because of overheating, razor burns, clipper burns. Sometimes it's the owners who never tell the groomer there is something under the fur and the animal gets injured when they're cut," Schultz said.

Sherffius said she's used J'Rae's for years, but that recently her regular comber moved to Florida and a new one took over.

Shih Tzus are sometimes cut short like poodles, but those with the characteristic long, silky hair that remains unshorn need frequent combing to prevent tangles. Sherffius normally does much of the work herself, brushing the dogs up to four times a day. But after falling and injuring herself late last year, she decided to get Jasmine and Gizmo some extra professional grooming.

She took them to the new groomer at J'Rae's about four times and never noticed anything unusual, except that the dogs' coats didn't seem to gleam quite as much or hang quite as perfectly as they did after being shampooed and styled by her old comber.

Sherffius said the vet recommended reconstructive surgery for Jasmine's ear, but she is not sure she wants to put her dog through more pain. She does hope that authorities decide to file criminal charges against the groomer.

"All I want is that she never gets a license, never gets to comb another dog," Sherffius said. "Who knows what else she's done to other dogs?"

Some Coats May Have Fur From Dogs
By KASIE HUNT, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - That fur trim on your jacket that you think is fake? Tell it to Fido. An animal advocacy group says its investigation has turned up coats _ some with designer labels, some at higher-end retailers _ with fur from man's best friend. Some retailers were set scrambling to pull the coats from shelves, take them off Web sites and even offer refunds to consumers.

The Humane Society of the United States said it purchased coats from reputable outlets, such as upscale Nordstrom, with designer labels _ Andrew Marc, Tommy Hilfiger, for example _ and found them trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, even though the fur was advertised as fake.

"It's an industrywide deception," said Kristin Leppert, the head of the Human Society's anti-fur campaign.

The investigation began after the society got a tip from a consumer who bought a coat with trim labeled as faux fur that felt real. Leppert and her team began buying coats from popular retailers and then had the coats tested by mass spectrometry, which measures the mass and sequence of proteins, to determine what species of animal the fur came from.

Of the 25 coats tested, 24 were mislabeled or misadvertised.

Three coats _ from Tommy Hilfiger's Web site ShopTommy.com, Nordstrom.com and a coat from Andrew Marc's MARC New York line sold on Bluefly.com _ contained fur from domesticated dogs. The others had fur from raccoon dogs _ a canine species native to Asia _ or, in one case, wolves. The single correctly labeled coat was trimmed with coyote fur, but it was advertised as fake.

Most of the fur came from China.

In response to the Humane Society's investigation, Tommy Hilfiger stopped selling the fur-trimmed garment and said it was looking into the matter. "We were quite concerned to hear of this finding," said spokeswoman Wendi Kopsick.

Nordstrom called the 62 consumers who had purchased vests with dog fur trim to give them the opportunity to return the vests "because we would never want to deceive our customers in any way," Nordstrom spokeswoman Brooke White said. She said Nordstrom no longer buys fur trim products from the vendor, who had marketed the vests as faux fur.

Charles Jayson, chief executive of Andrew Marc, disputed the Humane Society and insisted in a statement that all fur on his coats labeled as raccoon contains "only farm-bred raccoon fur from Finland, and our items labeled 'faux fur' are a 100 percent synthetic fabric."

Importing domestic dog and cat fur was outlawed in 2000. Intentionally importing and selling dog fur is a federal crime punishable by a $10,000 fine for each violation. Michael Markarian, executive vice president of the Humane Society, said his group had contacted all the retailers and designers selling mislabeled coats or coats with dog fur.

Raccoon dogs look like oversized, fluffy raccoons and aren't kept as pets. Importing their fur is not illegal, but activists argue they are still a type of dog.

"This is an animal that is routinely killed by stomping them, or beating them, or skinning them alive," Markarian said. Video produced by Swiss Animal Protection and posted on the Internet shows raccoon dogs clubbed or slammed on the ground and some writhing, gasping and blinking as they are skinned alive.

The discovery of domestic dog fur is the latest twist in the investigation that ensnared retail giants Macy's and J.C. Penney late last year. Both of those retailers were discovered selling coats with raccoon dog fur labeled as raccoon.

J.C. Penney initially removed the offending garments from its stores around Christmas _ but eventually it had employees scratch out the 'raccoon' label with black magic marker and put the coats back on the shelves. Macy's immediately pulled the items from its shelves.

Burlington Coat Factory also pulled some coats with mislabeled fur from their shelves. Rap artist Sean "Diddy" Combs stopped producing and selling coats from his Sean John line that had raccoon dog fur, and rapper Jay-Z pulled coats with raccoon dog from his Rocawear label.

Mislabeling fur is a misdemeanor punishable by a $5,000 fine or a year in prison. Fur valued at less than $150 is not required to be labeled.

A bill introduced by Reps. Jim Moran, D-Va., and Mike Ferguson, R-N.J., would close that loophole by requiring labels for all fur regardless of its value. It also would ban fur from raccoon dogs.

"Americans don't want Lassie turned into a fur coat," Moran said. "In the U.S., we treat cats and dogs as pets, not trimmings for the latest fashion wear."

Other retailers the Humane Society said sold mislabeled raccoon dog fur included Lord & Taylor, BergdorfGoodman.com and Neiman Marcus.com. Designers whose clothes were mismarked included Donna Karan's DKNY and Michael Kors. A coat from Oscar de la Renta advertised as raccoon had raccoon dog fur.

Neiman Marcus, which owns Bergdorf Goodman, said it removed Bogner and Andrew Marc coats from its Web sites. Michael Kors said it was investigating, and a DKNY spokeswoman said the label was unaware that raccoon dog fur had been used.

Donna Karan's executive vice president for global marketing and communications, Patti Cohen, said, "While it is not illegal to use this type of fur, we have taken measures to ensure that it is never again used for any of our products."

A spokeswoman for Oscar de la Renta declined to comment.

I currently have a samoyed and would like to get another dog for her to play with when I am at work. She tends to want to play with the smaller dogs in the dog park and ignores the bigger dog. I am not sure if it's because I have a cat. I would like a dog with soft fur that is not a major barker or too hiper. Do you have any suggestions?

What to ask potential foster families???

Hi all,

Some of you may have noticed my recent postings about my search for a foster situation for my Socrates. I am wondering now what kinds of questions I should be asking each potential foster family, and what kind of contractual agreements I should be making. I know that many of you are involved with dog fostering, and hope that you can give me some words of wisdom and experience!

Thanks very much!

when its too cold to play

hello all
I just joined this tribe and found it because I was wondering what others do to exercise their dogs in very cold weather. I am happy I found the post on here re cold weather tolerance because it has helped with alot of questions.

I am curious though what you do for your dog when the tempts are too cold to take them outside. I am in Minnesota and often it is in the below 0 F for extended periods, which is way to cold to take the pooches outside. what ideas have you used to entertain and exercise your dogs when it is clearly too cold to have them outdoors for more than 5 mins? i dont mean play ball inside or that sort of thing but more a rigerous exercise session... do you have a barn they run in, do you use doggy daycare or do you have a great suggestion for burning that pent up energy (or should I say helping them get rid of it before it becomes a problem) thanks all.

Desperate Repost ... Foster home needed

Hi everyone!

I am reposting this in the hope that someone may be able to help me and my gorgeous dog Socrates out. It's a big one ... I am moving back to Australia from Boston and want desperately to take my baby with me. However, all the quarantine places in Australia are filled up for the next 5-6 months. Since I can only legally (well, legally-esque - i think i'm already over my visa limitations) stay in america for another month, I cannot wait with him. So, I am hoping to find someone out there who loves animals and is willing to foster Socrates during the time it takes to secure him a spot in quarantine.

He is a beautiful fox terrier/beagle mix, with a truly old soul and the heart of an angel. He LOVES humans, and would bring so much love and affection to you. He's nearly 5, in good health, and I would of course provide a much remuneration as I possibly could, incl his food/vet bills.

It's a big ask, I know, but I have to try and believe that there is someone out there who may be able to help me and my beloved get through this. I've had him for a year, and cannot imagine my life without him. If you are interested, or know anyone who may be, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know asap!

Hoping and loving,
Lauren and Socrates

I'd like to feed them this great quality food- this has been going on for 2 weeks---

what's the answer here- any ideas???

Crash Victim Says Dog Saved Her Life
By ELLIOTT MINOR, AP

THOMASVILLE (Feb. 2) - A south Georgia woman bloodied in a car wreck says she owes her life to a German shepherd who - thankfully - just wouldn't stay in his yard.

[AP Photo]

Shannon Lorio strokes "Hero," a German shepherd she credits with saving her life. Lorio says the dog appeared mysteriously when she was injured in a car crash and dragged her to safety. Because of his performance, the dog will be evaluated for search and rescue work.

Shannon Lorio says that after her car careened down an embankment, the wayward dog found her bruised and battered on the vehicle's trunk, pulled her by her shirt collar, dragged her about 50 yards through briars to a highway and let her lean against him so she could flag a passing motorist.

His new name: Hero.

"That dog is always going to have a special place in my heart," Lorio said Friday. "He's my hero."

Hero's previous owners have signed him over to the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society since the Jan. 26 accident because he kept wandering off.

He won't be in the shelter long: Not only have at least 50 people offered to adopt him, a dog trainer has agreed to see if he has the right stuff for search and rescue work.

Lorio's car tumbled backward down an embankment in a remote, heavily wooded area. She said she lost control on a curve and was thrown onto the trunk.

"I was bleeding from my face and my nose," she said. "All of a sudden, I felt a presence - a really huge presence. He was straddling me. I have watched too many horror movies about werewolves and vampires. I thought he was going to eat me."

Instead, the dog licked her face, she said.

The 2-year-old dog, weighing 70 pounds, dragged the 136-pound Lorio to the highway, then stood by to help her summon help before she collapsed, she said.

Lorio, 36, of Pavo, said she can't adopt Hero because she already has six dogs, but she's showered him with gifts including a huge bone and a stuffed animal.

"If he ever needs anything, I'll be there," she said.

Dog trainer Heidy Drawdy, of Thomasville, will take Hero next week to see if he's cut out to be a search and rescue dog.

First item on the agenda for the wandering canine: obedience training.

Calling all angels!

Hi everyone!

I am hoping to find an angel to help me and my gorgeous dog Socrates out.

If you are interested, or know anyone who may be, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know asap!

Hoping and loving,
Lauren and Socrates
xox

well, the jumping at the back fence finally culminated in an injury.

not the one i feared most--of Maya actually following thru with her jump and going over and eating those two yappy chihuahuas

but in her tearing her cruciate ligament.

so, i've had to consult about my options

the typical operation to repair the ligament

and the newer (way) more expensive tplo (tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy)

anyone have direct experience with either?

Repost of dog food recommendations

*This was originally posted to someone with a dog that would throw up and had "allergies". The information applies to all animals. Our current common feeding practices can cause the problems addressed herein.*
Here's the deal... corn, wheat, soy, etc are not always the culprit. These are industry buzz words. In fact, true allergies are quite rare. What most of our animals suffer from are intolerances, not allergies. It is usually the quality of the food item, not the item itself. I have seen "allergy testing" performed and come back with a dog allergic to every protein source and pollen and blah blah blah. This simply is almost impossible. Yet our vets will tell us that feeding a crappy food and giving shots of all these offending items will help "cure". Well, I have not once seen a "cure", simply a temporary relief from symptoms.
Now then, as for some brand specific recommendations. There are a lot of quality foods out there. The reality is that you should rotate through all of the ones available in your area. I know this is not the wisdom of our local vets (they, as well as the pet food manufacturers tell us to feed the same food every day for life), but if this same advice were doled out to us by our pediatrician, well you would sue them. The same thing applies to our OMNIVOROUS companions. They require different foods. This will ensure they are not getting too much of one thing or too little of another. It also helps to build a stong digestive system. The CAUSE of animals having so many problems with switching foods is NOT switching foods. If you start young, the ideal, by giving a wide variety of foods then they will be able to tolerate changes. Here is a scenario for you: You get Fluffy as a pup. You feed her the same food for the first 2 years of life. Then you go on vaction, or move, or whatever and you are staying at Aunt Betsy's house. New water, Fluffy's food isn't available, new treats. Now you have explosive diarrhea, vomiting, and all around messiness at Aunt Betsy's (who dosn't like dogs anyway). Had Fluffy been given a variety of foods, she would have adjusted with little or no porblems. This is just one practical reason among many to change their foods regularly. I give my dogs something different every day if possible. At the least I buy a different bag of food each time I buy some. People food is fine for your dog, as long as it's fine for you. I mean healthy things like fruits and vegetables, pasta (no sauce), grains, meats, and so on. If it is healthy for us it is healthy for them. My pups love frozen carrots (especially good for teething puppies).
Nutro, Iam’s Eukanuba, Science Diet are not a very good choices. They use fractioned ingredients, which are of little use and can be harmful in sensitive pets. What you want to look for are whole ingredients. In animals already known to be sensitive, organic is the best choice. Which is to say, avoid generic descriptions like "meat meal" "poultry fat" , rather look for "lamb meal" or "chicken fat". Also avoid any chemical preservatives. Avoid foods with the same grain being used in different forms, like "rice" and "brewer's rice" and "rice gluten" and "white rice" and "brown rice" all in the same food. The total weight of the rice is far greater than any protein source, even if it is first on the label. Peanut hulls are not nutritious, under any circumstance, nor is beet pulp & tomatoe pumace. No salt or sugar should be added. If it doesn't taste good to a dog without all that, then there is a problem. They are after all dogs.
Now that you have endured some basics here is a list of commercially avaiable foods that have been shown to help sensitive animals and be pretty healthy all the way around. A good rule of thumb is that if you see them in a) a grocery store b) a warehouse type store (like Sam's or Costco) c) advertised on TV or d) is really cheap (you get what you pay for) you should avoid them. Certain to avoid are Purina, Pedigree, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Alpo, any Generic, Nutro, Old Roy, Kirkland, etc. You should expect to pay about $1 per pound. Understand it is actually cost effective as you are feeding less and they are not at the vets office as often. It only seems costly at first.
Some good ones:
Addiction Foods
Azmira
Back to Basics
Blue Buffalo
Burns
Canine Caviar
Evolve
Foundations
Go! Natural
Merrick
Natural Balance Ulta premium
Newman's Own
Nutrisource
Organix
Petguard
Wysong
Pinnacle
California Natural
Innova
Evo
Prairie
Wellness
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover (or whatever it's called)
Solid Gold
Canidae
Artemis
Bench & Field
Royal Canin
Versus
Eagle Pack & Holistic Blend (same maker)
Flint River Ranch (online)
Great Life (online)
PHD

There are many more, but this should be a good start

I recommend to everyone to subscribe to Whole Dog Journal (www.whole-dog-journal.com). They do a yearly top foods list that is exactly what you are looking for. They only rate top quality, natural, organic if possible, and "whole" foods. They do not take advertising so it is an unbiased rating. They also have the best articles on everything from behavior to herbs, to toys. It is THE best dog publication I have ever read (and I subscribe to a lot).

You want to be aware that if you have been feeding Nutro or other foods like this and you switch that you will need to feed a lot less actual kibble. The foods I have listed have whole ingredients and therefor the dog gets more from less. NEVER leave the food out all the time. Feed on a routine (especially for weight and vomiting issues). To give you an idea, I have 3 large dogs, 50 to 85 pounds. I feed 1/2 cup to 1 cup twice a day, by size and energy. At first you will feel like you are starving your dog. I promise you that you are not. It will become habit to feed less once you start to see results. You should also not expect relief from itchiness immediately. In fact, some dogs get a little (or a lot) worse before they get better. Be patient. The level of healing depends upon the level of intolerances and toxins built up.
For your case, she sounds like a young dog so you shouldn't have too many issues with that. Because she is vomiting, try multiple small meals (very small) and see how she does. Buy small bags until you find one that works for her. As she gains digestive strength switching will become easier. I would avoid Innova and foods with similar ingredients at first, they are pretty rich and may exacerbate the problem. California Natural is a good choice (even with the larger kibble pieces - small dogs CAN eat them). Look for limited ingredients at first. Even switching varieties with in a brand is a good idea. Wysong has small kibbles and I would recommend Synorgon or Anergen to start. You can check out their website too (wysong.com), even if you don't feed their food, the site is a wealth of information.
I realize I just wrote a lot of information and that it may a bit much to "digest", but I hope I have offered some help to you or anyone else having this problem, which thousands of dogs do!
Best of luck. Feel free to email me if you need any further info.

Trained, healthy and in dire need....

I have 3 dogs in desperate need of rehoming. I am a dog trainer and rescuer from New Orleans and I moved up here to Alabama. I am at capacity and out of resources - consequently, so are the animals. They have way too much time invested in them to go to a shelter around here.
Here are stories for each one:
First we have Lily. She is a 6 month old purebred Catahoula Leopard Hound. She comes from champion hog hunting stock and would be a great addition to any beying team. She will be a great addition to any active household whether they hunt or not. She is good with other dogs, cats and kids. She is crate trained, but will whine if she thinks it will get her way. She is a beautiful yellow brindle. She knows basic obedience manners like sit, wait, come, potty outside. She will require some additional training as she is still just a puppy. She is very snuggly and loves to cuddle. Since she is a working breed, she does require adequate exercise. She will chew her toys as long as they are available. She is still exploring with her mouth and occasionally gets something she isn't supposed to - diligence keeps this under control. She is a pretty mellow girl for her age & breed. She is eager to please and easily handled. Her vaccines are up to date and she is healthy. She will be spayed prior to placement. She comes wth some "extras" like Advantage & Heartgard. She will probably be about 50 pounds or so full grown.
Next we have:
North. He is a 2 year old Black Lab mx. Not certain what the mix is, but we are leaning towards Great Pyrenees. I found him at a rest area on I-65 (that's where he got his name). He was a wreck; full of wounds & ticks, emaciated, terrified of leashes & people. I brought him to a shelter to make sure he had noone looking for him. I was on vacation when I found him so I had no place to keep him. I just knew he was an awesome dog - you know "one of those". I adopted him from the shelter, had him neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested and after his clean bill of health had to board him for the next 2 months while I tried to find a place to live and work with him (I am from New Orleans and was actively seeking a new home). Once I got a place I got him from the boarding facility. They did a great job. With some additional positive training he has blossomed into a great dog. He walks nicely on a leash. He knows sit, wait, load up (into the truck), kennel (he absolutely loves his kennel and will need to have one), is housebroken and has all the basic good manners. He still needs some work on the come command. He always comes back, just on his own time. He is improving on this with consistant training. A fenced yard will eliminate this issue, as would a basic obedience class (I recommend both if possible). He is a big dog, but doesn't seem to take up space. He will play rough if allowed, I do not allow him to with me, but he does with my partner. He may be too big for small children, but has demonstrated good manners around young kids. He is good with other dogs, in fact he is great with them. He does well with my cats. As long as he has a kennel to be comfortable he will adjust quickly to any good home. He is up to date on his vaccines, heartworm negative, neutered and in great general health. He has a beautiful black shiny coat with white chest and white toes. He is eager to please and easily trained. He also comes with "extras".
And last but not least:
We have Lady. She is stunning Catahoula Leopard Hound mix. She is blue leopard with black and a bit of tan. She is about 45 pounds, spayed, heartworm negative, up to date on her vaccines and in great general health. She is just a lovely dog. She likes to cuddle a lot. She is crate trained, housebroken, knows sit, wait, load up (in the truck), come, down and shake, along with basic good manners. She does require good daily exercise. She may be too exuberent for very small children. She loves other dogs, maybe too much. She would be too much for the small, timid or sick/senior dog. She likes to play alot and is kind of loud when she does so - such is the breed characteristic. She does not bark excessively for no reason. She is an overall well balanced, well behaved, great dog.
So, if you are in the market for companions that have all the hard work done and just need to be molded into your roune - these are the dogs for you. While they are listed together and currently live together they are not up for adoption as a set, unless you want 3 dogs of course.
These guys have responded so well to rescue and rehabilitation that I would hate to see them wind up in a shelter because I am losing my house. Won't you make room for just one more?
Thank you for taking the time to read this - the animals appreciate it. Email me if you want any information and/or photos. Shipping arrangements can possibly be made under the right circumstances.

Anyone use Petfinder.com, Craigslist or other such networking site...

I am an animal rescuer and regularly post my animals that are up for adoption on Craigslist.org, Petfinder.com as well as anyplace I think I can help find them a good home.
My inbox is consistanty filled with responses from Religious leaders, businessmen from other countries, doctors from other states, and the bizarre list goes on. I also see the same thing in a new variation (the English Bulldog puppies were up here recently) now posted on the sites with pets up for adoption. Anyone posting their animals probably gets the same thing. The scam is always the same, they want all of your personal inforamtion first. Then any variation of sending you a payment for the "sale of pet" and shipping of "pet". You are then supposed to give someone the "extra" from the payment. Hmmm.
One would think if they are going to pull that kind of a scam they would find someone proficient in the English language to start. Possibly even reading your posting to refer directly to your animal.
I have written to the State Attorney General in several different states to inquire about how to stop this. They responded that while they are aware of it, it is not illegal to post/respond the way they are.
I imagine the law gets broken when the funding source is not legitimate and the person receiving the funds winds up with insufficient funds on the deposit or whatever, and by then they are long gone.
I do not know what to do to stop this. It is frustrating and hinders our ability to place our animals in need into quality homes.
Has anyone been a victim of this? Does anyone have any ideas for how to curb this madness? I currently just put all the responses in a folder or report them as spam.
I feel like it is hard enough to help the animals in our care without ruthless scam artists gutting us of the meager funds we have for what we are doing. Thank you for reponding and/or reading this. I am happy to forward any of the emails I have saved and maybe we can create a database of email addresses or track them somehow. I am not savvy at that kind of thing but I learn fast and am willing to help.
Thank you.
